Steps in Joining the Reserve Defence Forces:

To enlist in the 31 Reserve Cavalry Squadron present for enlistment at Kickham Barracks any Tuesday night from 20.00hrs to 22.00hrs.

Application Form

Each potential recruit must complete and sign an application form providing basic personal details. The recruiting staff will ensure that applicants meet the minimum requirements. A Birth Certificate (long type) and 4 passport photos will accompany the form details. If you are under the age of 18 you must have a letter from a Parent or Guardian giving you permission to join the Reserve Defence Forces.

Security Clearance

All applicants for the RDF must be security cleared by the Crime & Security Division of An Garda Síochana before we can process their application.
The application form contains the details required by the An Garda Síochana. In the event that an applicant is deemed to be unsuitable for the RDF, we are not given any specific details.

Medical Examination

The medical examination consists of two parts. The first part is conducted by medical staff in Collins Barracks Military Hospital. It consists of checks for eyesight, colour blindness, hearing, respiratory function and weight and height measurements.

The second part of the test is conducted in the Medical unit headquarters by a Doctor and consists of a general health check, medical history, blood pressure etc. While there is no physical fitness test, applicants must be in good physical condition.

Attestation

Once the security and medical checks have been completed applicants can be "attested" into the RDF. This process involves some more form filling and then an oath or declaration of loyalty. At this stage the applicant becomes a recruit in the 31 Reserve Cavalry and will be issued with an army number and clothing.
