The eighties were to herald some interesting developments for the squadron. It was during 1982 the title of the squadron was changed from ‘motor’ to ‘cavalry’ and two Panhard AML 60 Armoured cars replaced the now obsolete Unimogs.
Squadron personnel in Kick ham barracks also introduced an innovation in weapon training in 1982 with the construction of a new indoors air weapons range. This proved to be a huge success and its knock on effects were felt for many years afterwards with the squadron becoming a force to be reckoned with in Both Brigade and All army ( FCA) shooting circles
In 1985 a training center was opened in Fitzgerald camp , Fermoy Co. Cork which enable the squadron to liaise more closely in training matters with its sister unit 1 Cavalry Squadron. This center was greatly boosted by the willingness of former members of 1Cavalry Squadron to offer their services to up skill 3 Cavalry members with then current cavalry skills.
Again during this period the Squadron members were fighting above their weight in shooting competitions and orienteering. They achieved very respectable placements in the various competitions held at different levels.
The loss of the Lee Enfield rifle coupled with the introduction of the FN rifle was probably the final iconic change of the decade.
